FAQ
NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) is the main secondary school qualification in New Zealand. It is divided into three levels, typically completed in Years 11, 12, and 13.
NCEA Level 1: Usually completed in Year 11
NCEA Level 2: Usually completed in Year 12
NCEA Level 3: Usually completed in Year 13
You need 80 credits to achieve an NCEA certificate at each level: 60 credits at that level or above, plus 10 Literacy or Te Reo Matatini credits and 10 Numeracy or Te Pāngarau credits.
Each achievement standard can be assessed at different levels:
Achieved (A): Meeting the standard.
Merit (M): Exceeding the standard with deeper understanding.
Excellence (E): Demonstrating comprehensive understanding.
NCEA endorsements recognize high achievement and come in two types:
Certificate Endorsement: Awarded when a student earns 50 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in an NCEA level.
Course Endorsement: Given when a student earns 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence in a subject within a year, including at least 3 credits from both internal and external assessments (with some exceptions).
These endorsements highlight academic excellence and appear on students’ records.
